1. HSSC would like to introduce the newest additions to our staff!
Beginning July 19th, HSSC will have two new staff members on board: Meghan Lemay and Holly Macdonald.
Meghan and Holly will be your Evening League Facilitators each season. If you have any questions or require anything during your games you will be able to reach them throughout the night.
Currently we are in the process of getting them their own cell phones. In the meantime, please continue to call 403-3030 if you require anything at all. Meghan and Holly will be visiting games on a regular basis, taking pictures of leagues and ensuring everyone is having a great time while they play. So next time you see them out on the field or in the gym, make sure you say hello!
2. Looking to try out surfing?! Session #3 of HSSC’s ‘Ride the Wave’ Surf Lessons is August 14th
If you have ever wanted to try surfing, this is your chance! Join HSSC and professional Surfer Nico Manos in what will be a great day of surfing! Included in the package is your wetsuit, surfboard, and one hour of lessons followed by a full day of surfing at Lawrencetown Beach. Registration ends on Thursday, August 12th at 12pm, so make sure to register before the deadline! Click here for more information!
3. Register for HSSC’s ‘Stall This’ Ultimate Tournament!
Date: Saturday August 21st
Time: 9am - approximately 5pm
Cost: $225/team or $30/individual (plus taxes)
Details: All Teams are Guaranteed 4 x 30 Minute Matches. After the Round Robin there will be a semi-finals and finals. All Games will take place at Westmount Field near the Halifax Shopping Centre, up from the Rotary. Following the tournament, there will be a tournament banquet at the Pogue Fado, where there will be a lot of prizes given away and players can enjoy one of three meal options included in the registration cost.
Meal options include: Burger and Fries, Vegetarian Stir-fry, Chicken Alfredo Pasta.

Team of the Week: Dodge Caravan After several seasons with HSSC, The Dodge Caravan has conjured the strength of what some might compare to a group of mystical sorcerers, whirling clouds of dodging dynamism…and balls. Known also for their high flying, 'we love everything attitude', The Dodge Caravan can often be found smiling at each other, holding hands or playing tag (you're it). As a team The Dodge Caravan have several distinguishing characteristics; including, but not limited to, their height, beards, glasses, intensity, red hair, thirst, short shorts, cart wheeling prowess, dance moves, panther-like psych out techniques, jump catches, last man standing comebacks and trademark yellow shirts. If ever there was a team to feature for the week, surely this is the one. We have found our home in the recreational pool and think that Dodgeball is just about the greatest leisure activity known to man. 3. Have you always wanted to learn how to surf? You can pick your bottle up at the HSSC office or at any special event or tournament throughout the summer season. Available in Black, Red or Blue. 6. Rule of the week: Disqualification For some games, it may be hard for teams to get enough people to come out. If teams are short the minimum amount of players, a disqualification occurs. Whenever there is a disqualification the scores should be reported as a 1-0 loss for the team who was disqualified (Except in Volleyball which would be 25-0, 25-0, 25-0). It will be up to the team playing against them what spirit points they want to give them. If you know you are going to be short players, it is always best to give the opposing captain a call to let them know. From there you can decide what you want to do: play a game anyway shorthanded, borrow some players from the opposing team, borrow some players from another team. Just remember, if both teams agree before the game that the game will count, THE GAME COUNTS!Remember also, that you are able to pick up players up to the time of your game. All that will be required is that the player either be registered with the team on the website or has filled out a hardcopy of the Waiver forums which can be given to EC's before the game. Schedules: Please get in the habit of checking your e-mail and the HSSC website on game day. From time to time, we may get hit with an unexpected last minute gym cancellation or field change. We are usually able to find another location, but if you don't check - you won't know! E-mail and web updates are the most efficient way we have to reach you, so make sure you check schedules on game day! HSSC Member Key Tags: Every player within HSSC should have received a membership key tag from their captain. If you haven't received one yet, ask your captain, and if they don't have any please call us at the HSSC office and you can come by and pick one up! Think your team has what it takes? Every two weeks we will feature a team in this spot - do you exhibit outstanding spirit, sportsmanship, and skills? Let us know!Should your team photo be here? Wondering if your games are still being played? HSSC's policy with bad weather and rain-outs is that we play rain or shine. However, we do not have the final say if fields are open or not. The Halifax Regional Municipality determines each day whether the fields are ok to play on or if they are too wet. For weekday games, HRM posts closures on their website around 2pm, and for weekend games, HRM posts closures around 6:30am. The link to the Halifax Regional Municipality field closures website can be found by clicking here ("http://www.halifax.ca/rec/field_conditions.asp" target="_blank") . In the event of a closure, we will play a make-up game and the next available date for teams. In the event of severe weather (electrical storms etc) games should immediately be stopped and players should take cover away from open spaces. Wait 15 minutes; if the severe weather passes, continue play.Teams should proceed to their games as scheduled. Often, a matter of minutes or a few kilometers can mean all the difference (gotta love our micro-climates). Make a judgement call if there is a storm at your location, at the time of your game -- only HRM will determine prior to games if they will be cancelled or not. 5. Want to try out surfing? As such, we must be courteous and respectful of rules so we can continue to be granted permits. Please help us by ensuring you and your team are courteous to the custodians and follow these highly enforced policies by the schools: 1. Please Remove all outdoor footwear before entering the gym!It is very important that you remove all outdoor footwear before entering the gym. This is for two reasons: One it will prevent slippery floors and reduce the risk of injuries, and it will also keep the custodians at the schools extremely happy! As well, try not to wear your indoor shoes into the building at the chance that they might bring in water and snow. 2. School Door Closed?Please be sure that you read the facility descriptions on the website of how to enter the building. Once there, if a door is closed or locked, please be patient. DO NOT BANG ON THE DOORS! Normally custodians open the door 10-15 minutes before game times, if the door remains locked please call the emergency hotline at 403-3030. 3. Clean up your garbage when you leave!Please remove all water bottles and debris before you leave the gym! This is really important to ensure we are able to continue using facilities.4. No Dark Soled ShoesPlease make sure that your shoes are non-marking, so that the floors at schools stay clean. Scuff test your shoes with your heels at every school BEFORE you start playing.5. No Practicing in the HallsPlease do not practice in the school halls. Ceiling tiles, light fixtures, and windows are delicate and can be damaged by equipment.6. End your game on timeGames must end at the scheduled end time (no exceptions). Our permits only run until 5 minutes after the last scheduled game of the night. Halifax Sport and Social Club proudly presents a floor hockey tournament unlike any other.. The Waterfront Winterfest tournament will take place over two days, February 27th and 28th with all the games being played outdoors, downtown Halifax as part of the Waterfront Winterfest Festivities ("http://www.waterfrontwinterfest.ca/" target="_blank") . With thousands of spectators to cheer on your team, you better bring your "A" game as you battle for floor hockey supremacy. We found a great article on Best Health Magazine's website about how great of a workout Dodgeball is. Winter gym use HSSC relies on school gyms for many of our league sports. As such, we must be courteous and respectful of rules so we can continue to be granted permits. Please help us by ensuring you and your team are courteous to the custodians and follow these highly enforced policies by the schools: 1. Clean up your garbage when you leave! Please remove all water bottles and debris before you leave the gym! This is really important to ensure we are able to continue using facilities. 2. No Dark Soled Shoes Please make sure that your shoes are non-marking, so that the floors at schools stay clean. Scuff test your shoes with your heels at every school BEFORE you start playing. 3. No Practicing in the Halls Please do not practice in the school halls. Ceiling tiles, light fixtures, and windows are delicate and can be damaged by equipment. 4. End your game on time Games must end at the scheduled end time (no exceptions). Our permits only run until 5 minutes after the last scheduled game of the night. Please be sure to leave accordingly, and out of the door within 5 minutes. Custodians have families to get home to, and need to clean the gym first. 6. Get your team together for the March 6th 'Underdog' Dodgeball Tournament You think you have what it takes to be a dodgeball champ? Then "grab life by the ball" and join us for some fun! This HSSC Dodgeball Tourney will be a full day event - Teams are guaranteed 4 x 30 minute matches, and all participants (max 10/team) will receive a meal voucher included in the registration fee! The Puckey Brewsters, undefeated in nearly 3 full seasons of league play in the HSSC Thursday Floor Hockey League, finally lost a game! It was a close one, with a final score of 10-8 the Kevin Baconators managed to squeeze out the win and held on late in the game. I don't know if it was due to the talent of Rob Macintosh and his Baconator team or the sheer determination of the group, backed by the mystical powers of Kevin Bacon. Whatever it was, we now know that the Puckey Brewsters aren't invincible and that this season is shaping up to be one of our best yet!Good luck to everyone this season in the competitive floor hockey! They have also been undefeated in regular season play the last three seasons that they won. During their first game in the opening HSSC season in fall of 2008, they lost their first game 24-9... so they've come a long way! Sydney Crosby isn't the only player bringing trophies back to Cole Harbour, 5 players from their team are from Cole Harbour and they take turns holding onto the trophy. The most memorable trip for the trophy was when one of their players took the trophy to their wedding and had it at the head table! The team has been constantly battling the Kevin Baconators each season and has come up victorious each time, the Baconators vow to win next season!Congratulations to Puckey Brewsters!
